The Favourite Leads 2019 BAFTA Nominations

The 72nd BAFTA Award Nominations have been announced and, unsurprisingly, The Favourite lead the pack with 12 nominations.

The Favourite lead by a healthy margin as Bohemian RhapsodyFirst ManRoma and A Star Is Born followed with seven nominations. There were some interesting tidbits about the nominations as some of it mirrored most of the current choices for awards season but there were some surprises. Bohemian Rhapsody, which many thought would receive a Best Film nomination, was left out of the bunch and was instead nominated for Outstanding British Film. The Best Director category didn’t exactly mirror the DGA nominations which excluded Peter Farrelly (Green Book) and Adam McKay (Vice) for Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) & Paweł Pawlikowski (Cold War).

First Man also scored some significant nominations that weren’t just technical nods. Claire Foy made the cut for Best Supporting Actress and the film was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Oddly enough, it was left out of Best Original Music (their equivalent of Best Original Score) and that’s a category it has been most likely to pop up in.

Other surprises include Viola Davis landing a Best Actress Nomination for Widows, likely taking Nicole Kidman’s slot for Destroyer. Regina King, who has been the frontrunner in the Best Supporting Actress category, was left out for If Beale Street Could Talk and it appears Margot Robbie nabbed her spot for Mary Queen of Scots, much like she did with the SAG Nominations.

Also, The BAFTA’s didn’t show much love to Black Panther which only scored a nomination for Special Visual Effects. Another noticeable absence was If Beale Street Could Talk from the Best Film category but Barry Jenkins did score a Best Adapted Screenplay Nominations.

The awards ceremony itself will take place on February 10 at the Royal Albert Hall, with Joanna Lumley hosting for a second year running. Check out the full list of nominees below:
