#TBT Reel Review: Rocky

The boxing genre has been beaten to death throughout the years with many countless rehashings of the same up and coming fighter who struggles to get to the top. With that being said, there is one boxing film that not only has stood the test of time but broke the mold on what the genre generally puts out. That film is Rocky.

While some view Rocky as “another boxing movie”, Rocky‘s success dealt more with the fact that it was a boxing movie. The film struck a nerve with American audiences at the time because it was a direct message to a 70’s era lower middle-class dream of success.

Rocky Balboa’s life is one of crime and economic hardship, and he movesrocky1-steps-dance-610 through it, always in his leather jacket and hat, as if he belongs there. However, there is always a sense that he is somehow above it, if only because he is so powerfully resolute. The scene that emphasizes that early on in the film is when he talks to a little girl about how to have self-respect and be treated by guys and not be swallowed up by the city that they live in.

When given the opportunity for the World Heavyweight Championship against the arrogant Apollo Creed, the world outside of Rocky, views it as a joke and a publicity stunt; however, Rocky wants one thing, and that’s not to win the title, but to go the distance. A true lesson in that our successes are what we make of them. What is a loss to many, may be a victory to one.

11The guardian angel of Rocky Balboa and not only this film, but especially in the first 3 films is Burgees Meredith. While best known for portraying “The Penguin” in the 1960’s Batman series, his portrayal of grizzled boxing trainer Mickey is one of the most endearing performances I’ve seen in a film. Meredith’s portrayal received a nomination for best supporting actor and continues to be a talking point in any water cooler discussion on this film.

5da74baddb93102ac7adf1a707d1e85bOne of the most underrated aspects of the film is the relationship between Adrian and Rocky. Adrian’s turn from shy and quiet to a confident, loving woman is beautiful to see. It can be seen as the ideal relationship as both can be themselves with each other and not be afraid of negative opinions because of it. The chemistry between Stallone and Talia Shire adds to the depth of their relationship and a focal point to the success of the Rocky and Adrian love story throughout the franchise.

Bill Conti’s score punctuates the drama of the film. As some of the most iconic music ever composed for film, it breathes life into scenes, making it a bow on top of the present that is this great movie. Rocky was nominated for 10 Academy Awards and won 3 including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Editing.

Rocky is not only the best sports film ever made but one of the best feel-good movies ever made.
