The 25th annual SAG Awards aired last night and it was truly “Wakanda Forever” as Black Panther took home top honors with a win for Best Ensemble In A Motion Picture.
Black Panther beat out BlacKkKlansman, Bohemian Rhapsody, A Star Is Born and Crazy Rich Asians for the award and some are saying this does help its Oscar chances in the Best Picture race next month. Chadwick Boseman had this to say when the film took home the prize:
“It’s a pleasure to be celebrated by you, to be loved by you. And you know you can’t have a Black Panther now without a ‘two’ on it,”
The win and the speech were celebrated with rousing cheers from the crowd and it was a beautiful moment of inclusion being celebrated on stage. Black Panther has been breaking records and setting them left and right since its release and it’s now the first comic book film to take home the Best Ensemble Award at the SAGS.
Among the acting wins, The Wife‘s Glenn close cemented her favorite status with a victory, and Rami Malek scored another win for playing Freddie Mercury in Bohemian. Emily Blunt didn’t win for Mary Poppins Returns in female actor but did take supporting actor for A Quiet Place. On the male side, Green Book‘s Mahershala Ali kept his momentum going with his second win in the category in three years.
Television was also celebrated at the SAG Awards and it included big wins for Amazon’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel which pulled off a sweep in the comedy categories — Rachel Brosnahan, Tony Shalhoub in acting and the series for Ensemble — for the first time since 2008. On the drama side, NBC’s This Is Us repeated its Ensemble Drama Series win for the second year in a row while Darren Criss made it a clean sweep with his SAG win for The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story after previously winning an Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics’ Choice Award for his portrayal on the limited series. In the lead actor and actress categories for drama, Sandra Oh followed up her Golden Globe win with another win last night for her role on Killing Eve while Jason Bateman took home Best Actor for his role on Ozark, his first win in the acting category after eight nominations.
