The 76th Golden Globe Awards seems to have been generally well-received by most critics and viewers and now all eyes would be on how many people actually watched the ceremony. Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh were an attempt to skew the show a bit younger and by avoiding controversy and really focusing on the awards themselves, It looks like NBC can claim a bit of a win, despite a slight drop in total viewers.
The 2019 Golden Globe Awards hit a 5.2 in adults 18-49 and 18.6 million viewers. That’s up 4% in the key demo from the six-year low of last year’s Seth Meyers fronted Globes but down 2% in total audience from 2018. Some naysayers are proclaiming the show should’ve performed a bit better because it had the benefit of a massively watched NFL Wild Card playoff game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Chicago Bears, which actually ran long. My thought on this is that these two events really don’t share the same audience so I’m not really surprised it didn’t get a huge boost by airing after the game.
It should be noted that the Globes bucked the double-digit slip in viewers that has plagued the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys in recent years. You’re going to see various opinions on if NBC can claim this as a win. I’ve already read various publications that the network needed more of an improvement from last year but with diminishing returns in recent years for a lot of these shows, this is a performance that should be celebrated and not denounced as a flop. In the end, the Globes and that well watched NFL game handed NBC the best-metered market result of any Sunday since the Oscars back in March.
