Crazy Rich Asians has had one hell of a ride and that ride continued with two significant Golden Globe nominations today that resulted in one of its stars making a bit of history.
Not only was Crazy Rich Asians nominated for Best Picture – Musical or Comedy but its star, Constance Wu, also picked up a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. This makes her the first Asian-American woman to be in this category since Yvonne Elliman, who in 1974 earned a nod for her role in Jesus Christ Superstar. Before Elliman, it was Miyoshi Umeki, who was nominated for 1961’s Flower Drum Song, and Machiko Kyo for The Teahouse of the August Moon. Umeki went on to win an Oscar and remains the only Asian woman to win an Academy Award in an acting category.
