91st Academy Award Nominations Announced, Roma & The Favourite Lead With 10 Each

The 91st Academy Award nominations have been announced and it continues an awards season trend where anything is possible.

Roma and The Favourite led the way with a total of 10 nominations. Both films are featured in the Best Picture & Best Director categories (Alfonso Cuaron for Roma, Yorgos Lanthimos for The Favourite) and they are also represented in the Best Actress and Supporting Actress categories as well. Roma also makes a bit of history by becoming the first Netflix film to be nominated for Best Picture.

Black Panther earned 7 nominations, including a big one for Best Picture, making it the first comic book film to receive this honor. The rest of its nominations were in technical categories, as well as a nomination in the Best Original Song category.

A Star Is Born also picked up a slew of nominations and although Bradley Cooper received three nominations overall (Best Actor, co-writer for Best Adapted Screenplay & as a producer for Best Picture) he was left out of the Best Director category which is very surprising considering he has been included in this category heavily leading up to the Oscar nominations and even received a DGA nomination. For A Star Is Born, Lady Gaga nabs two nominations for Best Actress and for her work on the Best Original Song nominee, “Shallow”.

I’ll have a more in-depth look at some of the snubs and surprises in another piece but you can check out the full list of nominations below. The Oscars will be presented live on February 24 at 5 PM PT/8 PM ET on ABC.

Gaius Bolling
At the age of five, I knew I wanted to write movies and about them. I've set out to make those dreams come true. As an alumni of the Los Angeles Film Academy, I participated in their Screenwriting program, while building up my expertise in film criticism. I write reviews that relate to the average moviegoer by educating my readers and keeping it fun. My job is to let you know the good, the bad, and the ugly in the world of cinema, so you can have your best moviegoing experience. You can find more of my writing on Instagram @g_reelz.
